10 kms from Wagah border with India
Pakistani security forces have recaptured Manawan police training school ,10 kms west of Wagah border with India ,after eight hours of fighting with terrorists who seized the complex during a morning drill. Over 25 people were killed, including eight policemen and eight militants. Nearly 100 people have been injured, according to reports.
A month ago terrorists had attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, killing six policemen. The escaped terrorists have not been traced so far.
The 26/11 rape of Mumbai which lasted for nearly 3 days was much more sophisticated and complex operation , which gravely diminished ‘Brand India’ equity running into tens of billions of dollars in India as a secure place, for investment and tourism .The Chinese were delighted at the lethal damage to West promoted notions of India as a fast emerging nation not far behind China.
US led illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003 and brutal occupation only provided on job training to radicalized Muslim youths from Arab countries, Pakistan and other Muslim states and Muslims from Europe specially UK. The blossoming of this Frankenstein monster will see many more devilish operations , with India a very soft and easy target. In the terrorists eyes India is now clubbed with USA,UK and Israel.
“India has unfortunately become the "sponge" that protects us all. India's very proximity to Pakistan, which has developed into the epicenter of global terrorism during the last thirty years, has resulted in New Delhi absorbing most of the blows unleashed by those terrorist groups that treat it as a common enemy along with Israel, the United States, and the West more generally. To the chagrin of its citizens, India has also turned out to be a terribly soft state neither able to prevent many of the terrorist acts that have confronted it over the years nor capable of retaliating effectively against either its terrorist adversaries or their state sponsors in Pakistan”-from a testimony for the US Senate Committee.
President Obama or any one else cannot say ’band hoja sim sim’ close down the door to Ali Baba’s cave from where this endless supply of Muslim terrorists ( instead of jewels) would keep coming out . Not that Obama has said so .USA is preparing for an Afghan ‘surge’ aka more boots in Afghanistan , more drone attacks inside Pakistan’s north west , and Balochistan. The US military-Industry complex remains powerful and any downsizing would further decrease economic growth. It also keeps American masses diverted from increasing daily miseries on the home front
The success of the ‘Surge’ in Iraq is a western corporate media myth. This month alone saw many attacks and suicide bombers in Iraq’s many cities. Iran and its allies are happy consolidating their power in Iraq. Reportedly during the last visit of Sec state Hillary Clinton to Ankara, a contingency plan to evacuate US personnel and arms via north Kurdish Iraq, a US protectorate since 1991 and adjoining Turkish south east , was discussed to avoid Shia south Iraq ie Basra and then Kuwait.
To understand the evolving situation we might look at some what similar situations in Islamic history. Prophet Mohammad was both the religious leader and military commander. But the Arab caliphs lost out to the Turkish slaves from central Asia by 10th century who formed the core of their fighting forces .They took over power and raised the minor title of Sultan to a high rank , who then literally became a protector of the Caliph , left with only religious powers. (These were also transferred to Istanbul later)
The Seljuk rulers based in Rumi Calphate at Konya in the centre of modern day Turkey had to brutally suppress religious rebellions many times .To keep out the energetic and rebellious soldiers and freelance militias from mischief ,rulers in Konya sent them out as Ghazis to harass neighbouring Christian Byzantine territory. Out of these freebooters emerged a small band of Ghazis led by Ertugrul , whose small principality was expanded by his son Osman and descendents into Europe and along South Mediterranean up to Morocco and east up to Iran and Oman on the Indian ocean.
Like the Konya Sultanate the Pakistanis under its religious President Zia ul haq with financial support from USA and the West and Saudi Arabia and other Muslim states sent Jihadis and militants aka modern day Ghazis into Afghanistan in 1980s , who defeated the Soviets . Eventually the Communist edifice undermined by Slav nationalism and Orthodox Christianity collapsed by the beginning of 1990s .
This conglomerate of various militias, free booters, religious fanatics, nationalists and tribal chieftains classified as Al Qaeda ,Talebans and other militants are like the Janissaries of the Ottoman empire , their most effective fighters who had terrorized European Christians and helped expand the Ottoman empire to the gates of Vienna .After the Ottoman Sultan took over the Caliphate and brought over clerics from Mecca , the Janissaries , became very religious and obscurantist and a vested interest .Instead of terrorizing the enemies of the Ottoman empire ,they now terrorised the Sultans and killed and replaced some of them .Finally the Janissaries had to be destroyed .Would Pakistan be able to do that ie defeat the Talebans and associates!
I think that an unwilling Pakistan and its masters have missed the opportunity. Twice President Musharraf escaped assassination and presumptive heir Benazir Bhutto was assassinated .
